Robert Chiu
Former Organizer, San Francisco

Robert was born in Hong Kong but left for Canada at the ripe old age of three months. He grew up in a really small town (Englehart, pop. 2000) in northern Ontario where the winters were cold, life was simple, and hockey was a natural passion.

Robert attended the University of Western Ontario and graduated with an Economics B.A. After a five-day westward drive across Canada, Robert finally found Vancouver and a job working for BC Tel (now known as Telus) and discovered the relaxed west coast life.

After living there for three years, Robert continued on his journey westward from Vancouver to Hong Kong in early 1996, mainly to get his HKID before the handover back to China. The original plan was to stay for a year or so and to experience life in Asia as it was, but like many others, he ended up staying in Asia for not one but seven years!

During that time, Robert traveled extensively throughout Asia and even got a chance to see Europe... not bad for a hick from the brawling woods of Canada, eh?

Like a true Canadian, Robert managed to find hockey out in Asia and participated in many tournaments around the region (Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok, and Harbin), though his strangest and most memorable experience had to have been at an outdoor rink in Ulaan Bator, Mongolia in the middle of winter!

Robert also picked up some warmer weather sports such as scuba diving, dragon boating, and golf. He worked in Hong Kong for Thomson Financial for over three years, and then for Bloomberg LP for another two before transferring to Bloomberg's San Francisco offices in 2003.

Robert has been in San Francisco for the past year and plays hockey twice at week at the Yuerba Buena Center. For the most part, he has adjusted to life back in North America but misses the sponteneity of Asia's lifestyle and might someday head back in that direction.

In the meantime, what better way to get the vibe of Asia than to be involved with ORIENTED!?
