Louis Huang Organizer, Kaohsiung Born in the sweltering southern Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung, Louis Huang took up the life of a "migrant" from an early age, growing up in Tokyo, Kaohiusng, and Vancouver. He thought of himself as Japanese until he began wearing the blue and white in a Taiwanese elementary school; he memorized his world history in Mandarin but learned the proper usage of "eh?" while watching his breath freeze in the Canadian winter. His college years were spent in Montreal; he entered the School of Architecture at McGill University, where he feverishly scored with X-Acto knives and took countless pictures of sidewalks. After graduating with a Master's degree in Architecture, he did what any wild salmon would have done: he came back to where he was spawned. Upon returning to Kaohsiung, Louis was somewhat overwhelmed by the task of reacquainting himself with the Taiwanese society and the "perks" of being the only child in the family. He came across ORIENTED while searching for the voices of Taiwanese "bananas" (and drinking buddies) on the World Wide Web. Professionally, Louis worked as a website graphic designer and an architectural intern in Canada. He also worked shortly as a draftsman at a local Taiwanese architect's office. Currently, Louis works in real estate development and is preparing for the Taiwanese architect's licensing exam. The weary traveler now speaks Japanese, Mandarin, English and his native tongue, Taiwanese... nevertheless, the ability to hand-write a complete sentence in Mandarin without referring to a character dictionary eludes him still.
